Podrunner, Podrunner Intervals, Groove Electric
Podrunner, Podrunner Intervals, and Groove Electric are all podcasts created by the incredible mix master DJ Steve Boyett. With literally hundreds of hours of sidewalk-pounding music, you're guaranteed to find at least a couple hours worth of music at his website. And did I mention it's all FREE??!!?!?! Most of the music is a mix of house, techno, and re-mixes of classic music designed for running. I'm not typically a big fan of this type of music, but DJ Steve somehow makes it work. iTunes reviewers give all three podcasts 4-5 stars, and they are consistently ranked as top podcasts on iTunes, so I'm not the only one who thinks they're great!
Podrunner: Podrunner is "free exercise music mixes for runners, joggers, power walkers, cyclists, elliptical trainers, aerobics, or anyone who can use nonstop, fixed-tempo music when they train." Each mix (and there's over 100 at last count) features a specific BPM, so you can choose different mixes - based on the BPM - for different workouts. Currently offerings include mixes at every BPM from 130-180, giving 51 mixes in rotation which means it's nearly a year before a particular BPM comes around again (new mixes are offered on a weekly basis).
Podrunner Intervals: Podrunner Intervals are "free, varied-BPM workout music mixes are for runners, joggers, and power walkers at all levels and are designed to build endurance and improve overall conditioning." Each mix contains a mix of music at higher and lower tempos, and each tempo change is indicated by a chime. The really cool feature of these podcasts is that all the mixes are part of actual training programs that will help get you ready for a road race. The three training programs are:
First Day to 5KIf you've never run before, or are returning to running after a long hiatus, this series, following the popular Couch to 5K template, is designed to take you from your first day to a full 5K (3.2-mile) run in just 9 weeks (plus a bonus "graduation mix"). Gateway to 8k If you're a 5K runner and want to work your way up to 10K runs, or if you've just completed the First Day to 5K series and want to move on, this 10-week series — designed especially for these podcasts by renowned fitness coach Jenny Hadfield — is just what you're looking for. Coach Jenny also provides valuable tips at the end of each mix, and sometimes works with you on form as you run. Freeway to 10K If you want to enter a 10K event, or just continue to grow in your training and ability, this 10-week program will help you get there. Designed especially for these podcasts by renowned fitness coach Jenny Hadfield, who also provides valuable tips at the end of each mix.
Groove Electric: My personal favorite of the three podcasts, Groove Electric is "a rare & happy marriage of new electronic dance music and old funk sound." According to DJ Steve, it's "Modern electronic dance music with a classic funk sound. House, progressive house, tech house, spoken word — whatever moves ya."Some of my personal favorites are Wellspring, Curve of Binding Energy, Goofin, The Radiant Day, Low Clouds and Fog, Drumfire, The Great Scheme of Things, and 48 Hours of Bliss. Everyone's music taste is different, so check out a number of these mixes to find the ones that work best for you.
All of the mixes listed above are available at djsteveboy.com. You can also subscribe to the podcasts via iTunes. And if you're feeling particularly frisky, once you've downloaded some of this music, use the music to create your own personal music mix.
