Kettlebell workouts are a great way to get in shape with a minimal amount of equipment and a minimal amount of time.
Russian strongmen used kettlebells as far back as the 1700s. A kettlebell, or girya, is basically a cast iron ball with an attached handle. The kettlebell is used to perform exercises like kettlebell swings, kettlebell snatches, and the kettlebell clean and press.
Kettlebell exercises are unique in that they are used mainly for ballistic movements. Unlike dumbbell exercises where the movements are slow and controlled, kettlebell exercises feature dynamic movements and swings.
For instance, the #1 kettlebell exercise, the kettlebell swing, involves holding the kettlebell with one or both hands, and swinging it down between your legs as you squat, then swinging it up to chest height as you snap out of the squat.
Kettlebells come in a variety of weights, from 10 pounds all the way up to 106 pounds. If you’re just testing the waters with kettlebells, you might want to try making your own adjustable kettlebell.
I love working out with kettlebells – they are such a change from your average workout! There are a few things to consider if you plan on trying a kettlebell workout:
1) Kettlebell training requires proper form. If you’ve never swung a kettlebell before, it’s a great idea to work one-on-one with a certified kettlebell instructor to determine what size kettlebell you should be using and to get the proper technique nailed down.
2) There are a wide variety of kettlebell exercises to choose from. Take a kettlebell class, buy a book on kettlebells, or browse through kettlebell exercises in this section.
3) Start light. If you haven’t been working out consistently, start with a light kettlebell and increase the weight as your strength increases.
Some of the best kettle bell exercises are kettlebell swings and kettlebell snatches. If you’re looking for a fun, new and exciting workout, give kettlebells a try!
