Both of my parents are in their eighties, and both are diabetic. My dad’s diabetes has progressed to the point where he has to give himself shots of insulin on a daily basis. Had they been more knowledgeable about diabetes, it’s possible the disease would not have progressed to where it is today.
Diabetes mellitus – or simply diabetes – is a condition where someone has a high level of blood sugar. This elevated level of blood sugar is due to one of two factors – either that person’s body does not produce enough insulin (insulin gets the sugar from the blood into the muscle and the liver); or that person’s cells are simply unresponsive to insulin.
No matter the reason for the elevated level of blood sugar, the results are the same – diabetes increases your risk of early death, and increases your odds of getting numerous related diseases, such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, as well as other conditions, such as high blood pressure and blindness.
